Three Nigerian Students Win Gold at International STEM Olympiad in Rome

Three Nigerian students who emerged from the South East Mathematics Olympiad have brought pride to the nation and their sponsor by winning gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy.

The achievement was announced on X by Alex Onyia, the organizer of the South East Mathematics Olympiad and sponsor of the students' trip to Rome. Celebrating their success, Onyia described the trio as the “Three Wise Men from the East.”

The gold medalists are:

• Chimdiebube Onwubiko (13 years)
• Don Anele Munachimso (17 years)
• Onyedikachi Egejurum (11 years)

Hosted at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, the International STEM Olympiad attracted participants from more than 150 countries who competed in Mathematics and Science contests.

Among the outstanding performances, Don Anele Munachimso won a gold medal in Science, while Onyedikachi Egejurum secured gold in Primary Mathematics. Chimdiebube Onwubiko also earned a gold medal, completing a remarkable sweep for the Nigerian team.

The students had earlier distinguished themselves at the South East Mathematics Olympiad, a competition organized by Alex Onyia that attracted over 11,500 students from across Nigeria's South-East region. Following their impressive performances at the regional competition, Onyia sponsored the three students, along with two teachers, at the prestigious international event in Rome.

Their success highlights the growing impact of grassroots STEM initiatives in Nigeria and showcases the exceptional talent of young Nigerian students on the global stage.
